N. Arlington Marine's family disagrees with flag-lowering

"(02/22/12") NORTH ARLINGTON - A North Arlington family that lost a loved one while he served his country is wondering if he got the full respect that he deserved.

The deaths of New Jersey natives Montes de Oca, a Marine, and of Whitney Houston have been a flashpoint in the debate over when flags should be lowered and for whom.

Gov. Chris Christie sparked fierce debate when he ordered flags around the state lowered to honor Houston, who battled drug and alcohol addiction before her death. Christie later ordered flags lowered for de Oca as well.

Montes De Oca's mother, Miriam Moreta, says the move to lower the flag for Houston was not one that she accepts. The Marine's older brother, Sandro Moreta, adds that the family thanks the community for its support.

In the weeks following the Marine and the singer's deaths, News 12 New Jersey has received thousands of comments on our Facebook page regarding the issue.

"(02/22/12") NEWARK - Newark Mayor Cory Booker's 2012 budget plan includes a sizable property tax increase proposal.

Businesses and homeowners may be asked to pay for a 6.8 percent tax increase to offset an expected $20-30 million shortfall, which is more than last year but less than 2010. News 12 New Jersey asked some residents what they thought about once again being asked to dig deeper into their pockets.

""[It's the] nature of the beast. The price of chicken is going to rise at the supermarket every year, too,"" says Bruce Ford, of Ridge Street.

""It costs a couple of thousand dollars you don't have,"" says Alain Beade, owner of Stop and Go Tire on Third Avenue. ""You have to save it up for the taxes, you know what I mean?""

The budget is expected to be formally introduced by the end of February.

News 12 New Jersey will carry Mayor Booker's State of the City address live.
